OVERVIEW

THROUGH REAL-WORLD HUMAN RIGHTS ADVOCACY EXPERIENCES, the Walter Leitner Human Rights Clinic aims to train a new generation of human rights lawyers and contribute to inspiring, results-oriented, practical human rights work throughout the world.

The clinic partners with non-governmental organizations and foreign law schools on human rights projects ranging from legislative reform, legal and policy analysis, fact-finding and report writing, human rights training and capacity-building, and public interest litigation.  Fieldwork abroad is a component of a limited number of projects each semester.

In the past three years the clinic has worked on projects focusing on HIV/AIDS in Malawi in partnership with the Coalition of Women Living with HIV/AIDS; sex workers rights in India in partnership with SANGRAM; female genital mutilation in Sierra Leone in partnership with the Center for Safe Motherhood Youth and Child; constitutional reform and reproductive rights in Ethiopia in partnership with students and faculty at Addis Ababa Law School; land rights in Cambodia in partnership with Salvation Centre Cambodia; access to justice in Liberia in partnership with the Carter Center; prisoners rights in Malawi; fair trade in Lebanon in partnership with the Centre for Research Training Development Action; child maintenance in Sierra Leone in partnership with Timap for Justice; returnee rights in Cambodia in partnership with the Returnee Integration Service Center; and Native American women's reproductive health rights in partnership with the ACLU of South Dakota.

Future projects will continue to engage human rights issues in the clinic's focus countries of Cambodia, Ethiopia, India, Lebanon, Liberia, Malawi, Sierra Leone, and the United States.  Future projects will also engage human rights issues in Latin America.
