European Human Rights Law
SUMMERY
The first part of the course will examine the changing framework of human rights protection within each of these two European systems, with an emphasis on the emergence of the newer human rights regime within the EU and its implications for human rights protection in Europe more generally. The basic institutional framework and functioning of each of the two systems, and their respective strengths and weaknesses will be discussed and compared, and the interaction between the two considered. The second half of the seminar will examine a number of selected substantive topics, exemplifying some of the main challenges facing human rights in Europe at present. These include anti-discrimination law, the response to terrorism, and the problems of multiculturalism.

OVERVIEW
This seminar aims to introduce participants to "European human rights law" by focusing both on the European Union's human rights system on the one hand, and the Council of Europe's human rights system, in particular the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), on the other.
