Ms. Joe Read will discuss the history of the recent conflict in Darfur, examining the use and impact of sexual violence during the initial conflict and as it continues today.  She will also explore international responses to these issues, and consider the impact of humanitarian operations and the relationship between the humanitarian community in Darfur and the advocacy community in the West.

Ms. Read is the Darfur Fellow at Physicians for Human Rights, a Health and Human Rights NGO based in Cambridge, MA. She is the author of the forthcoming publication, Darfur One Year On: Humanitarian Response Post-Expulsions, and works in Washington, DC, and New York, coordinating advocacy around treatment and support for survivors of Sexual and Gender-based Violence in Darfur. Before joining PHR, Ms. Read worked at the Globe for Darfur Advocacy Network of international NGOs focused on Darfur advocacy and campaigns. She is also a Fellow at the Committee on Human Rights Studies at Harvard University, where her academic focus is the representation of women in the Darfur Peace Accords and the Darfur-Darfur Dialogue and Consultation (DDDC) process.
