The Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana, Her Ladyship, Mrs. Georgina Theodora Wood has paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor. She was accompanied by Justice S.A Brobbey (Justice of the Supreme Court, Accra), Justice P. Baffoe-Bonney (Justice of the Court Of Appeal, Accra), Justice K.A. Fobih (Supervising High Court Judge, Kumasi) and other members of the Judicial Service.
In his welcoming address, the Vice-Chancellor Professor Kwasi Kwafo Adarkwa congratulated the Chief Justice on her elevation to the highest office of the Judiciary. He also thanked the Chief Justice for devoting part of her busy schedule to visit the University. He expressed the hope that her visit would inspire female students of the school to strive for excellence.

Briefing the Chief Justice and her entourage on the history of the Law Faculty, the Vice-Chancellor said that since its establishment in 2003, the undergraduate law degree programme has trained many students the first batch of which was admitted to the Ghana Law School in Accra last year and the second batch this October. He reiterated the University’s keen interest in the development of the Law degree programme. To this end, the University has built new building for the Law Faculty which was commissioned by his Excellency, President J.A.Kufour. Prof. Adarkwa used the opportunity to solicit the support of the Chief Justice in the establishment of a second Law School in Kumasi – a vision dear to the KNUST administration.

On her part the Chief Justice expressed her gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor for his overwhelmingly warm reception. She also commended the effort that the Vice-Chancellor and his team have made in developing the Law Faculty. She noted in particular the Supreme Court Clerkhip Programme in collaboration with the KNUST Faculty of Law and supported by the Leitner Centre for International Law and Justice at the Fordham Law School, New York City. The Clerkship programme aims at providing Supreme Court Justices with the needed research resource and support in their challenging function. It is also intended to afford an opportunity for mentoring, and the ultimate nurturing of talents for the Ghanaian Bench.

The Chief Justice assured the Vice–Chancellor that she would put the issue of a second Law School in Kumasi before the General Legal Council for their consideration. She said that the Vice-Chancellor may be invited to take part in deliberations on the issue.

Later in the evening the Vice-Chancellor held a dinner at his residence in her honour.
